Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that the company will unveil its Tesla Roadster on October 1, nearly a decade after the electric sports car was first revealed.
Tesla confirmed the date through its official account on X, where the company posted ‘Go for launch’ alongside an image showing the date October 1. Musk later responded to the announcement and confirmed that the new Tesla Roadster would be unveiled on that date.
What feature could Tesla Roadster have?
Tesla originally unveiled the next-generation Roadster in 2017. The company said deliveries were expected to begin in 2020. However, that deadline passed and the programme was repeatedly delayed.
In August, The Information reported that Tesla was preparing to unveil a redesigned version of the Roadster. The upcoming event could include a demonstration of a special limited edition model equipped with cold-gas thrusters developed in collaboration with SpaceX.
According to the report, such a demonstration could take place at SpaceX’s testing facility in McGregor, Texas. However, full details of the planned demonstration have not been officially confirmed by Tesla.
The Roadster project has also reportedly changed during its long development period. It is said to have evolved from a more conventional high-performance electric vehicle into a new carbon-fibre hypercar. Reportedly, Tesla moved away from an earlier approach that would have used components related to the Model S Plaid.
Tesla pushes ahead with new vehicles
The Roadster announcement comes as Tesla continues to develop other vehicles and technologies.
The company recently began offering rides in its two-seat Cybercab in limited areas of Austin, Texas. The Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals and is Elon Musk’s plans for Tesla’s future in autonomous transportation.
Tesla has also been advancing its long delayed Semi electric truck. The company is preparing to expand the Semi into the European market as it looks to increase its presence in electric commercial transportation.
On October 1, Tesla is expected to finally reveal how much the Roadster has changed since its original unveiling in 2017.
