Sindh has reported another rabies case, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 23.
Doctors at Jinnah Hospital Karachi confirmed that a 27-year-old woman from Tando Allahyar had contracted the deadly viral disease.
The woman was bitten by a stray dog on her right ankle. She later received three doses of the anti-rabies vaccine.
According to hospital officials, she was brought to the hospital at around 4:30am on September 12.
Doctors said the woman was showing symptoms linked to the deadly viral disease.
What is rabies?
Rabies is a deadly viral disease that attacks the central nervous system and causes inflammation of the brain. It is a zoonotic disease, meaning it spreads from animals to humans, typically through the saliva of an infected mammal.
Initial symptoms resemble the flu, including fever, headache, weakness, and unusual tingling or pain at the site of the bite.
The survival rate is virtually zero percent (effectively 0 per cent) once clinical symptoms appear, making it nearly 100 per cent fatal. Fewer than 40 people worldwide have ever been documented to survive a symptomatic rabies infection. The rare individuals who did survive often suffered permanent, long-term neurological damage.
It is pertinent to mention that dogs and bats are responsible for more than 90 per cent of all human rabies cases globally.
