Sega and Netflix have announced a new collaboration covering several video game adaptations. The deal includes Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and STRANGER THAN HEAVEN. The announcement was made on September 14, 2026. It brings several Sega franchises to Netflix in different formats. The projects will cover comedy, animation, and live-action crime drama.
Crazy Taxi film adaptation announced
The first project from the partnership will be a film based on Crazy Taxi. The movie will come to Netflix as a feature adaptation. Writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand will handle the screenplay. The pair worked on the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher will also produce the film. Toru Nakahara from Sega will join them as a producer. The same team has worked on the successful Sonic film franchise.
Crazy Taxi first appeared in arcades in 1999. The game puts players behind the wheel of a fast-moving taxi. Players race through busy streets while trying to complete fares quickly. The series became known for its chaotic driving and energetic style. The latest game, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, is scheduled for release in 2027.
Sonic project also in development
The collaboration also includes a new animated Sonic series. The project is currently in development with Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara. The series will target an upper pre-school audience. It will feature Sonic and his friends as the main heroes.
Netflix already has a strong connection with the franchise. Three seasons of Sonic Prime are currently available on the streaming service. The new series will use comedy and action while focusing on younger viewers. Sega described the upcoming Sonic project as cute and cool.
Sega expands partnership with Netflix
As part of a wider multi-title agreement. The partnership also includes STRANGER THAN HEAVEN. That project comes from RGG Studio, known for the Like a Dragon and Yakuza franchises. STRANGER THAN HEAVEN will become a live-action film. It is set in early 20th-century Japan.
The story follows a foreigner who rises from poverty to become a feared yakuza. He later becomes an entertainment tycoon while facing conflicts over honor and betrayal. Netflix said the projects represent different eras and styles from Sega’s game catalog. The company is also expanding its wider collection of video game adaptations.
