Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz chaired a video-link meeting on school education, where officials gave a detailed briefing on students’ examination results and education reforms.
During the meeting, Maryam Nawaz expressed concern over the Class 9 examination results and decided to introduce a new ordinance for legal action against teachers linked to poor academic performance.
The meeting agreed to link teachers’ performance with students’ examination results. Immediate action was ordered against schools where the Class 9 pass rate is below 20%.
The government also decided in principle to introduce monthly and annual examinations for every class. Officials have been directed to present a complete timeline and education reforms plan next week.
The chief minister also directed authorities to reward schools achieving strong results, with awards to be given to top-performing schools in each district.
For academically weak students, the meeting approved evening coaching in government schools. Officials also agreed to discourage the practice of removing students from schools because of poor academic performance.
Maryam Nawaz ordered authorities to fill vacant head teacher positions within 45 days and ensure the appointment of subject specialists in government schools. The education minister was also directed to strengthen checking and monitoring at every level.
The chief minister expressed satisfaction with the results of Government Girls High School Bhon in Jhang. Government Girls High Schools in Muzaffargarh and Layyah secured the second and third positions based on results.
The meeting also decided to introduce a “Unified Monitoring App” to monitor schools and sought district-wise monthly performance data.
Meanwhile, Punjab will launch a pilot project of “Library on Wheels” from Lahore. The solar-powered three-wheeler library will have more than 20,000 digital books and provide video-learning lectures.
Maryam Nawaz also sought a performance report on outsourced schools.
“Point scoring will not improve the situation in government schools; actual improvement is needed,” the chief minister said, adding that teachers’ efforts should be reflected in students’ results.
