Security has been tightened in Islamabad ahead of possible protest marches and sit-ins, according to reports today.
Where are containers being placed in Islamabad?
Authorities have started speeding up efforts to seal the Red Zone, reports say. Containers are being placed at Serena Chowk and other key points to block roads.
The containers are being fixed together with iron bars and metal sheets. They are also being welded so they cannot be moved easily.
More containers placed around Red Zone
According to media reports, the containers are being welded to keep them firmly in place during any possible protest or march.
More containers are also being placed behind the first line of barriers around the Red Zone. This is expected to make it harder for protesters to cross the barriers.
Authorities are also placing barriers at different entry and exit points of Islamabad. Security has been increased at several important locations.
The measures have been taken in view of possible protests and sit-ins. However, the road closures and barriers may affect traffic and the movement of citizens in the capital.
Recently, authorities decided to seal the Red Zone and Extended Red Zone in Islamabad.
Will Red Zone be sealed?
All five routes leading to the Red Zone will be closed. Two layers of containers will be placed on each route. A heavy police presence will also be deployed in the area.
The Extended Red Zone will also be sealed. Authorities said it will only be opened in case of an emergency.
Islamabad police leave suspended
The Islamabad Capital Police has also suspended all types of leave for its officers and officials until October 5, 2026.
According to a circular issued by the Islamabad Inspector General of Police on September 18, casual leave, earned leave, and ex-Pakistan leave have been suspended.
Emergency leave will still be allowed.
The order also directed police officers and officials who are currently on casual or earned leave to return to their places of posting immediately.
