South African all-rounder Marco Jansen produced an outstanding all-round performance as hosts South Africa defeated Australia by 67 runs in the first ODI in Durban. Chasing a target of 298, Australia were bowled out for 230 in 41.2 overs. Matthew Breetzke was named Player of the Match after scoring a magnificent 112 runs.
Jansen was also instrumental in South Africa’s victory, scoring 75 off 59 balls, taking a wicket and completing a spectacular catch to dismiss Matt Renshaw. Renshaw was batting on 44 when he attempted to play a delivery from Gerald Coetzee in the 36.1st over, with Australia at 215 for six. Jansen displayed exceptional athleticism near the boundary, diving to complete a stunning catch and bring Renshaw’s innings to an end.
The remarkable effort left the commentators and cricket fans impressed as Jansen made a significant contribution with the bat, ball and in the field. Australia won the toss and opted to bowl first, putting early pressure on South Africa and restricting the hosts’ scoring rate.
South Africa initially struggled to build momentum, but Matthew Breetzke changed the complexion of the innings after coming to the crease at No. 4. He settled in with a series of conventional cricketing strokes before forming a crucial partnership with the powerful Marco Jansen.
Breetzke continued his impressive ODI form, scoring 112 off 106 balls to register another major contribution in his 15th match in the format. Jansen provided the acceleration, matching his career-best ODI score with a blistering 75 off 59 deliveries.
In reply, Australia made a flying start. Mitchell Marsh smashed 60 from just 36 balls, combining with Travis Head, who scored 36 off 37, to put on 90 runs for the opening wicket in only 9.2 overs.
However, Australia lost momentum as several batters gave away their wickets after getting starts. The turning point came when Jansen produced a spectacular one-handed diving catch in the outfield to dismiss Matt Renshaw for 44. The dismissal left Australia struggling at 215 for seven, and the visitors were unable to recover, eventually being bowled out for 230 to hand South Africa a 67-run victory.
