The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a new monthly sanitation fee for homes and businesses in urban areas. The charges will come into effect from October 2026.
The provincial government has issued an official circular containing the new fee structure.
The amount residents will pay depends on the size of their property. Commercial properties will have separate rates based on their type.
How much will residents pay?
Residential properties will be divided into different categories according to plot size.
- Residential properties: Rs100, Rs150 or Rs200, depending on plot size
- Commercial shops: Rs250 per month
- Hotels: Rs1,000 per month
- Petrol pumps: Rs1,000 per month
- Factories: Rs1,000 per month
- Major business centres: Rs1,000 per month
The new charges will be collected every month from October.
The government says the revenue will support a more organised sanitation and waste management system in urban areas.
However, several institutions have been exempted from the monthly sanitation fee.
Mosques and seminaries will not have to pay the charges. Government schools and certain other special institutions have also been granted exemptions.
The provincial government has also asked citizens to cooperate with sanitation authorities.
Residents have been advised to keep their surroundings clean and avoid throwing waste in streets or other public spaces.
The government says cooperation from residents will help improve cleanliness and make waste collection more effective.
Punjab also introduces new system to collect cleaning fees
On the other hand, Punjab government recently introduced a new system to collect cleaning fees in cities across the province. The Excise and Taxation Department will collect these fees with property tax.
The Suthra Punjab Authority and the Excise Department have signed an agreement for the new system. The heads of both departments signed the agreement.
The Excise Department will collect the fees during the 2026-27 fiscal year. It will also conduct house-to-house surveys and print cleaning fee bills for properties Survey houses across cities, prepare cleaning fee bills, and collect cleaning fees from property owners.
The Punjab Cabinet Committee approved the system in August.
