Taiwan has received its first two new F-16V fighter jets from the United States. The aircraft arrived after months of delivery delays. The jets landed at Taitung’s Chihhang Air Base on Friday. They form part of a larger order approved by Washington in 2019. The delivery comes as Taiwan continues to strengthen its air force. The island frequently monitors Chinese military activity near its territory.
First two jets arrive in Taiwan
Taiwan ordered 66 F-16V Block 70 fighter jets from the United States. The first two aircraft arrived on October 2. The aircraft travelled through Hawaii and Guam before reaching Taiwan. They landed at the air base around noon local time. Taiwanese Defence Minister Wellington Koo said more F-16Vs would arrive soon. He did not provide a detailed delivery schedule.
The minister also indicated that only two aircraft would not be the complete delivery for the year. The arrival marks an important stage in Taiwan’s long-running fighter jet programme. The order aims to expand and modernise the island’s F-16 fleet.
Delivery faced several delays
The United States approved the $8 billion fighter jet sale in 2019. The deal is expected to increase Taiwan’s F-16 fleet to more than 200 aircraft. However, the programme faced delays before the first aircraft reached Taiwan. Software issues were among the problems affecting the delivery schedule. Taipei has previously raised concerns about delays involving weapons purchased from the United States. Washington remains Taiwan’s main international arms supplier.
The latest delivery therefore comes after a lengthy wait for the new aircraft.
Advanced systems on the F-16V
The F-16V Block 70 includes updated avionics, radar and weapons systems. These systems are designed to improve the aircraft’s combat and detection capabilities. The upgraded aircraft can help Taiwan respond to growing military pressure around the island. The jets are also intended to improve Taiwan’s ability to monitor airspace. The F-16V programme adds newer aircraft to Taiwan’s existing fighter fleet. Taiwan also completed an upgrade programme for its older F-16s in 2023. The United States has not provided Taiwan with its most advanced fighters. These include the F-22 and F-35 aircraft.
Taiwan faces growing security pressure
Taiwan has increased its focus on air defence as Chinese military activity continues around the island. Taiwanese aircraft regularly scramble to monitor Chinese military movements. The new F-16Vs will add modern aircraft to those defence operations. The delivery also comes during continued debate over future US arms support for Taiwan. Washington says its policy toward Taiwan has not changed. Beijing has repeatedly urged Washington to stop supplying weapons to Taiwan. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and opposes military support for Taipei.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry did not immediately comment on the latest F-16V arrival. A US State Department spokesperson said Washington continues to support security across the Indo-Pacific.
More F-16Vs expected
The first delivery is only the beginning of Taiwan’s planned purchase. The remaining aircraft are expected to arrive in future batches. Taiwan’s first new F-16V fighter jets arrive to bolster defences against China after months of delays. Their arrival adds modern aircraft to Taiwan’s air force. The delivery also highlights the wider security relationship between Taiwan and the United States. It comes as Taiwan continues upgrading its military capabilities.
For now, Taiwan’s first new F-16V fighter jets arrive to bolster defences against China as part of the island’s wider effort to modernise its air force.
