The Punjab government has announced plans to celebrate Diwali across the province under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Provincial Minister for Minority Affairs Ramesh Singh Arora announced the celebrations in Lahore and extended his Diwali greetings to Hindu communities in Pakistan and around the world.
He said the provincial government would celebrate the religious festival alongside the Hindu community with special events and colourful activities.
According to the provincial minister, a special Diwali festival will take place in Rahim Yar Khan on November 4, 2026.
The event will bring members of the Hindu community together to celebrate one of their most religious occasions.
Another major Diwali celebration has been scheduled for November 6 in Lahore.
Arora said the celebrations would be held with enthusiasm, allowing the government to share the happiness of Hindu citizens.
The provincial administration also highlighted its commitment to creating an environment where people from different religious backgrounds can celebrate their traditions.
Why is Diwali celebrated?
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is widely called the Festival of Lights.
It is one of the most important festivals in Hinduism and is also observed by some other religious communities.
The festival represents the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.
Families traditionally celebrate by lighting oil lamps, decorating homes, wearing new clothes, exchanging sweets and spending time with relatives and friends.
Many people also offer prayers and take part in community gatherings during the celebrations.
In Pakistan, Hindu communities celebrate the festival in several parts of the country, particularly in Sindh and Punjab.
The Punjab government’s planned events in Rahim Yar Khan and Lahore will provide opportunities for community participation and cultural exchange.
Officials say the celebrations are intended to strengthen religious harmony and encourage respect for the province’s diverse traditions.
