New York woke up to its heaviest snowfall in nearly four years after a powerful winter storm covered large parts of the US north-east.
New York City’s Central Park recorded 4.3 inches (11 centimetres) of snow — the highest snowfall there since January 2022. Other areas of the state received up to 7.5 inches of snow, according to the US National Weather Service (NWS).
Ahead of the storm, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in more than half of the state’s counties.
The severe weather caused major travel disruptions. On Saturday, airlines cancelled more than 900 flights, mostly in the New York region, while over 8,000 flights faced delays across the country, flight-tracking website FlightAware reported.
By early Saturday, snowfall ranging between 6 and 10 inches had blanketed areas from Syracuse in central New York to Long Island in the south-east.
Heavy snow also hit neighbouring states. New Jersey declared a state of emergency, while parts of Connecticut saw significant snowfall, with Fairfield County recording 9.1 inches.
