The Education Department has issued a formal schedule to resume academic activities after the end of winter vacations for all public and private educational institutions in warm and humid Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts including Peshawar.
As per the notification issued by the Elementary and Secondary Education Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the schools situated in the central and southern districts of the province will reopen from January 16 after the winter holidays.
The notification clearly states that teaching activities will begin according to the newly (fixed) school timings to ensure continuity in education.
The Education Department added that the school timings have been arranged keeping the weather conditions and students’ convenience in view.
However, according to parents in Peshawar, sending children to school in such a harsh weather could be harmful to their health and increase the serious risk of illness.
Earlier the Punjab government has extended winter vacations from Dec 22 till Jan 19. Classes will resume on January 20.
Winter vacations in schools of Punjab have been extended till January 19, 2026, provincial education minister Raja Sikandar Hayat has confirmed that earlier.
The schools were scheduled to be open on January 12, however due to extreme cold weather the vacations have been extended on the demands of the parents.

He said all educational institutions across the province will reopen on January 12 after winter vacations.
However, he also conducted a public survey on his twitter account and asked people to vote when the schools should be reopened on January 12 or 19. Most people voted for January 19 due to the extreme cold weather and smog.
