ECP suspended membership of Lawmakers

By failing to submit the assets declarations the Election Commission (ECP) has suspended the membership of 159 lawmakers.  

Those suspended include 32 members of the National Assembly, 50 members of the Punjab Assembly including Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat,33 members of the Sindh Assembly, 28 members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, 7 members of the Balochistan Assembly, and 9 senators.

The ECP has also suspended the membership of nine senators. Those affected include Federal Ministers Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Musadik Malik, BNP chief Akhtar Jan Mengal, Ali Musa Gillani, Abdul Qadir Gillani, Saira Afzal Tarar, Mehrin Razaq Bhutto.

Fauzia Arshad, Abid Sher Ali, Murad Saeed, and Noor-ul-Haq Qadri memberships have also been suspended from the Senate.

“The suspensions will remain in effect until the required asset details are submitted in accordance with the law” the Election Commission stated.

The ECP said the submission of yearly statements is obligatory under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017. Under Section 137(1), all member of an assembly and the Senate is obligatory to submit, on or before December 31 each year, a statement of assets and liabilities—including those of their spouse and dependent children—as of June 30 of the same year.
