Schools barred from forcing parents to buy supplies from specific shops

The practice of forcing parents and students to purchase school supplies from specific shops has been declared a violation of the Punjab Private Educational Institutions Ordinance.

The Punjab government has banned the practice of forcing parents and students to purchase textbooks, uniforms, and other educational materials from specific shops, warning private schools of strict action in case of violations.

According to a notification issued by the School Education Department, private educational institutions are no longer permitted to compel parents to purchase books, uniforms, or other learning materials from designated vendors or service providers. Such practices have been declared a violation of the Punjab Private Educational Institutions Ordinance.

The department stated that action will be taken against private schools found involved in illegally pressuring parents to purchase items from specific outlets. Officials emphasised that schools must allow parents the freedom to buy educational materials from vendors of their choice.

Authorities have urged parents to report complaints regarding such illegal practices to the relevant education authorities or the Chief Minister’s Complaint Cell. The government has assured parents that their rights will be protected.

Officials further said that the law is already in place and its implementation will be strictly ensured across the province to prevent exploitation of parents and students.
