An intense 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit northwestern Kashmir on 19, January, 2026 that jolted the areas across Gilgit-Baltistan, several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In parts of Hunza and Nagar falling rocks and soil movement were seen along hillside roads that has disrupted traffic and raising safety concerns for travelers.

An intense earthquake also hit Islamabad and other major cities of Pakistan including Rawalpindi.

As per the authorities the epicenter earthquake was situated near the Kashmir region, warning precautionary measures in high-risk zones.

Although no major casualties were immediately reported, local administrations activated monitoring teams to measure potential damage and identify unstable slopes.

Experts warned that aftershocks could further weaken already fragile terrain, making landslides more likely in the coming hours.

The authorities have advised the locals in affected areas to avoid unnecessary travel near sharp slopes and remain alert to official advisories as assessments continue.
