As summer arrives, a severe water shortage crisis has emerged in several areas of Karachi, leaving citizens desperate for every drop.
Water supply has remained suspended for the past four days in several areas, including Korangi, Landhi, Shah Faisal Colony, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, PIB Colony, Saddar, Old City Area, Mahmudabad, Defence Housing Authority and Gulberg.
The inner sources revealed that in the name of repair work, a large part of the city has been without water for the past four days. An 84-inch diameter water pipeline developed a leak in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 19.
Repair work began last Monday, resulting in a reduction of 200 million gallons of water per day from the Dhabeji Pumping Station supply to the city.
Reports indicate that due to the repair work on the 84-inch pipeline, the city’s water distribution system was severely disrupted, causing widespread hardship.
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation claimed that the pipelines would be recharged and the water supply restored by Wednesday or Thursday.
Despite these assurances, the normal water supply has yet to resume. As a result, obtaining water has become extremely difficult for residents.
Many citizens are compelled to purchase water tankers at high prices. Water supply to the city’s main commercial centre, the Souk Centre, has also been suspended, causing severe difficulties for employees and beggars. Even mosques are facing water shortages, making it difficult to perform ablution.
Water pipeline bursts, leakages and power outages have become routine issues in the city. Following recent heavy rainfall, water shortages have become a recurring problem.
Additionally, due to the repair work on the 84-inch pipeline, water supply from the Landhi and Sherpao hydrants has been halted. At the same time, supply from the Safoora and NIPA hydrants has also been severely affected.
