The federal government has announced a new high speed railway service between Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
The service will reduce travel time between the twin cities to just 20 minutes instead of the travel taking hours.
It is also expected to make commuting faster, easier, and more comfortable for thousands of passengers.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi made the announcement while inaugurating a new electric bus depot and charging centre in Islamabad.
The project is part of efforts to promote eco-friendly public transport in the capital. He said the Rawalpindi-Islamabad railway service is being restored.
The federal cabinet and relevant ministries have approved a dedicated high-speed train service between Margalla Railway Station in Islamabad and Saddar Railway Station in Rawalpindi.
The journey between the two cities will take approximately 20 minutes.
When will the Islamabad Rawalpindi high speed railway service start?
The service is expected to start on March 23, 2026. It will run on existing railway tracks with modern, upgraded trains.
The new rail service will help reduce traffic congestion and lower the costs of fuel. It will also provide an affordable, high-quality commuting option for daily travellers.
Observers say this step reflects the government’s focus on public welfare and modern urban transport.
The plan was first unveiled last September after a high level meeting led by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi.
Senior officials, including the Minister of State for Interior and representatives from the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Pakistan Railways, also participated in it.
Under the arrangement, Pakistan Railways will maintain the track infrastructure. While the CDA will manage operations.
Additionally, the feeder services, including electric buses and the existing Metrobus network, will provide last-mile connectivity for passengers.
