The government of Sindh has set new rules for the rickshaws in Karachi.

The traffic police of Karachi have announced that new regulations will be introduced under which only those rickshaws with a meter will be allowed to operate in the city.

While briefing the Karachi Press Club, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Police Karachi, Pir Muhammad Ali Shah, said that the department is also working to reroute the Qingqi rickshaws and remove them from the major roads of the city.

This will help in traffic management and road safety, he added.

DIG Traffic Police said that the Karachi Traffic Police is preparing a new policy to address issues faced by motorists using the city’s electronic traffic fine (e-challan) system.

Pir Muhammad Shah said the initiative is part of wider efforts to improve traffic management and road safety in the city.

He acknowledged that some motorists have experienced problems with the e-challan system, explaining that fines are generated automatically and can sometimes result in errors. He said the new policy aims to provide relief in such cases.

The DIG said the introduction of lane markings and the e-challan system has helped improve the flow of traffic in Karachi.

He also highlighted road safety concerns, saying 164 people were killed in accidents involving heavy vehicles in Karachi last year.

Pir Muhammad Shah further revealed that official records show around 45,000 vehicles are still registered in the names of previous owners. He said action has been taken against several individuals over the issue, with some cases being referred to the police.
