Pakistan struggles as its path to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-finals has become very complicated with New Zealand’s emphatic 61-run victory over Sri Lanka in Colombo on Wednesday, February 25.
New Zealand Strengthen Grip
New Zealand national cricket team increased their Net Run Rate (NRR) to +3.050 with the win and as a result, they planted themselves well in the race to be second in the semi-final list from Group 2, right behind England cricket team.
England had already secured qualification after edging Pakistan national cricket team by two wickets in the Super Eight Stage. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan national cricket team have been eliminated out of the tournament.
What Pakistan Must Do?
Pakistan are mathematically alive but has a steep challenge ahead of them. With an NRR of -0.461, they have to beat Sri Lanka by a huge margin in their last Match of the Super Eights.
In simple terms, Pakistan need a big win, a win by 70 runs, and also need England to beat New Zealand. The precise margin will depend on the outcome of the clash between England and New Zealand.
How Net Run Rate is Changing the Equation
If England beat New Zealand by 20 runs, then approximately 50 runs victory will be required by Pakistan over Sri Lanka to progress.
The general rule is that the margin of combined wins of both England and Pakistan must heavily go in Pakistan’s favour.
For example, if England score180 and beat New Zealand by 30 runs and assuming similar totals it would mean Pakistan will need to win by 40-runs.
In chasing scenarios, Pakistan will need to achieve the target in 14-15 overs.
Weather and Implications of the Venue
If England vs New Zealand is washed out, then New Zealand will automatically qualify.
However, if New Zealand beats England, they will top the group and eliminate Pakistan. The outcome will also decide the venue for the semi-final. Kolkata if New Zealand qualify or Colombo if Pakistan makes a dramatic turnaround.
Despite the odds, Pakistan are far from out, but they do need near-perfection.
