India registered a commanding 72-run victory over Zimbabwe in their Super 8 stage encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, posting the highest total of the ongoing tournament and delivering a dominant all-round performance.
Batting first, India piled up a massive 256 for 4 in their allotted overs, setting Zimbabwe a daunting target of 257 runs. The total marked the highest score of the current edition of the World Cup.
India’s innings was powered by explosive knocks from several top-order batters. Abhishek Sharma led the charge with 55 runs, while Hardik Pandya hammered a rapid 50 off just 23 balls.
Tilak Varma provided late fireworks with a blistering 44 off 16 deliveries. Ishan Kishan contributed 38 runs, captain Suryakumar Yadav added 33, and Sanju Samson chipped in with 24 to push the total beyond the 250-mark.
For Zimbabwe, captain Sikandar Raza, Mozabbani, Mapusa and Richard Ngarawa claimed one wicket each but struggled to contain India’s aggressive batting display.
In reply, Zimbabwe fought hard but fell short, managing 184 for 6 in their 20 overs. Opener Brian Bennett played a valiant, unbeaten knock of 97, keeping his side’s hopes alive for much of the chase. However, he lacked substantial support from the other end.
Captain Sikandar Raza scored 31 before being dismissed, while Tony Min-Yonga made 11. Moses Kiva managed 7 before falling to Shivam Dube, and Murumani scored 20 before being dismissed by Axar Patel. Arshdeep Singh was the standout performer with the ball for India, claiming three wickets to derail Zimbabwe’s pursuit.
With this comprehensive victory, India strengthened their position in the Super 8 stage, showcasing both batting depth and bowling discipline in a high-scoring contest in Chennai.
