Punjab imposes 7-day section 144 amid security concerns

The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province for seven days due to potential threats and concerns about public order.

The Punjab Home Department has issued a notification banning gatherings, processions and demonstrations.

According to the department, intelligence reports indicate that sensitive gatherings could be targeted by terrorists.

Reports suggest that miscreants may target scholars attending such gatherings, potentially causing unrest and sectarian violence.

Officials have stated that preventive measures have been taken to address the risk of sectarian tension and disruption of public order. Under the ban, public gatherings of four or more people are prohibited in Punjab.

Law enforcement personnel are exempt from the restrictions while on duty. Additionally, gatherings related to marriages, funerals, and burials are not affected by the ban.

Holding gatherings in public places without permission is also prohibited. However, law enforcement officials are exempt from the ban while on duty.

Gatherings related to marriages, funerals

Gatherings related to marriages, funerals and burials, as well as meetings of government and semi-government offices and courts, will also be exempt.

The Home Department has stated that the display and use of weapons in public places is completely banned across Punjab. This ban applies to all types of weapons, both licensed and unlicensed. Restrictions under Section 144 have been imposed for seven days.

A spokesperson said that all necessary measures will be taken to maintain law and order and protect public life and property. District administrations and police across Punjab have been directed to ensure strict implementation of the notification.
