80,000 Phones Stolen in the Capital Last Year :London Police

Phones Stolen London Police

London Police say a major phone theft network has been exposed after raids across the city. About 80,000 phones were stolen in London last year, many snatched by masked thieves on e-bikes.

Recent operations are showing where a large share of those devices went.

Raids uncover stolen phones and cash

In a two week crackdown, Metropolitan Police officers searched several secondhand phone shops. They recovered around 2,000 stolen phones and £200,000 in cash.

Additionally, officers also opened safes and seized records to trace the supply chain.

Moreover, the push reflects a new focus on common crimes that have angered Londoners, who for years complained of getting only a crime reference number after reporting thefts.

How the theft pipeline worked

A key lead came last December when a victim used Find My iPhone to track her device to a warehouse near Heathrow.

Inside boxes labelled as “batteries” but bound for Hong Kong, police found nearly 1,000 stolen iPhones.

Therefore, a specialist team, usually assigned to firearms and drug cases, took over.

Detectives then identified shipments and, on Sept. 23, arrested two suspected ringleaders.

Phones were found wrapped in aluminium foil to block tracking. In addition, police believe the group exported up to 40,000 phones, while some devices were reset and resold in Britain.

Why stolen UK phones end up abroad

According to investigators and independent experts, many stolen British phones are shipped to China and Algeria as part of a “local to global” business model.

One reason: some Chinese network providers do not use international blacklists, so a handset blocked in the UK can still work there.

The newest phones can fetch up to $5,000 overseas, creating big profits for traffickers.

Police say they are now using location data from victims to map routes, target middlemen, and keep pressure on the network behind London’s phone theft network.
