Karachi toxic rain

The death toll from heavy rains in Karachi has reached 19, as weather remains gloomy with downpour across the city.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of a tragic building collapse in Mawachh Goth, one of several deadly incidents reported during the downpour.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds swept across parts of the city on Wednesday night, leading to multiple casualties due to collapsing walls and roofs.

In Baldia Town’s Mawachh Goth, rescue teams have recovered 13 bodies from a collapsed structure, while search operations remain ongoing amid fears that more people are trapped under the debris. Officials stated that several victims had taken shelter in the building during the storm, with reports suggesting many were drug addicts.

The chief minister has directed authorities to accelerate rescue efforts, urging the use of all available resources.

Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited the site to oversee operations. Lanjar directed maximum efforts to rescue any survivors, while Wahab ordered immediate medical assistance for the injured.

In separate incidents, two people, including a woman, were killed in a wall collapse in Landhi’s Majeed Colony, with three others injured. A man died after being struck by lightning near Yaru Goth in Malir, while a woman was killed in a roof collapse in Korangi. Another fatality occurred in Korangi No 5, where a man died after a tree fell on him.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), thunderstorms and strong winds are expected in various districts of Sindh during the next 12 to 24 hours in the latest weather update.
