A large shipment of Nestle’s crunchy KitKat chocolate bars was reported stolen in Europe, as stated by the brand, which cautioned that this theft could lead to shortages in stores just before Easter.
KitKat, a brand owned by the Swiss food conglomerate Nestle, confirmed in a statement issued to AFP on Saturday that “a truck carrying 413,793 units of its new chocolate range has been stolen during transit in Europe”.
The shipment, which weighed approximately 12 tonnes, vanished last week while it was en route between production and distribution sites, according to the statement.
“We have consistently encouraged individuals to take a break with KitKat,” a spokesperson for the brand remarked, alluding to its well-known slogan.
“However, it appears that thieves have interpreted this message too literally and have made off with over 12 tonnes of our chocolate.”, they added further.
KitKat may suffer shortage in stores after theft
The brand cautioned that “the theft may result in a shortage of KitKats on store shelves,” acknowledging that “consumers may unfortunately find it difficult to locate their preferred chocolates in time for Easter”.
The stolen KitKat truck had departed from central Italy and was en route to Poland, with plans to distribute the bars in various countries along the route.
KitKat did not specify the exact location where the goods went missing, but indicated that “the vehicle and its contents are still unaccounted for.”
“Investigations are ongoing in close collaboration with local authorities and supply chain partners,” it said.
KitKat further warned that the missing chocolate bars “could enter unofficial sales channels across European markets”.
