AJK Legislative Assembly election schedule coming in May

The Election Commission is set to announce the schedule for the upcoming Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly election in May 2026.

As per legal requirements, the commission must finalise and present a comprehensive working plan at least 120 days before the elections, ensuring adequate time for preparations, logistics and administrative arrangements.

The upcoming polls are expected to draw significant political attention, with parties gearing up for what is likely to be a closely watched electoral contest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

High-level meeting held regarding AJK election preparations

An important high-level meeting was held in Islamabad regarding preparations for the upcoming 2026 general elections of AJK.

The meeting was chaired by AJK Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal.

During the meeting, detailed consultations were held with political parties. The Chief Election Commissioner reiterated his commitment to conduct free, fair and transparent elections. He announced that the election schedule will be released in May 2026, adding that under the law, the Election Commission is required to present a working plan 120 days in advance. He emphasised that the elections will be held on time.

The Chief Election Commissioner also stated that, to ensure security during the elections, it is planned to conduct them under the supervision of the Pakistan Army.

The meeting included detailed discussions on the timely preparation of voter lists, the provision of basic facilities at polling stations, and various measures to improve the election process.

Consultations were also held on special arrangements to facilitate voters among the refugees of Jammu and Kashmir. The participating political parties presented their proposals regarding the accuracy of voter lists, security arrangements, and electoral transparency.

At the conclusion of the meeting, it was agreed that consultations between the Election Commission and political parties would continue. The Chief Election Commissioner further stated that the Constitution will be strictly followed in relation to the presidential election.
