The Senate Standing Committee on Commerce has approved the setup of an Expo Centre in Quetta, Balochistan.
A meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Commerce was held at Parliament House under the chairpersonship of Anusha Rahman to review the proposed Expo Centre in Quetta.
The session was attended by Sarfaraz Bugti along with several senators, while others joined virtually.
CM defends project location
During the briefing, committee members were updated on the current status of the project and related concerns.
Addressing questions about the proposed site, the Balochistan Chief Minister (CM) said Quetta is a secure city comparable to other major urban centres in Pakistan.
He added that the selected location is close to an active industrial zone.
Officials also informed the committee that the site had been cleared from a security perspective by the Planning Commission, though the project has faced delays.
Some committee members raised concerns about the long-term viability of the Expo Centre at its current location.
They pointed to its distance from the airport and potential difficulties for international visitors as key issues.
Proposal for additional facility near airport
In response, the chief minister proposed that the current project should move ahead as planned, while a second Expo Centre could be developed closer to Quetta Airport.
He said the location for the additional facility would be finalised in consultation with the provincial cabinet, committee members and stakeholders, including the Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Committee backs revised plan
After a detailed discussion, the committee reached a consensus and approved the Expo Centre Quetta project.
Officials said the decision reflects an effort to balance immediate development needs with longer-term accessibility for business and trade activities.
