China builds world’s first floating island

China has unveiled the Open-Sea Floating Island, the world’s first ultra-large marine research platform, an important breakthrough in the scientific and technological goals of the country.

The project was created as a part of a nationwide infrastructure initiative, and it should enable the latest research in the marine sciences, resources, and ocean equipment development.

The floating facility is perceived as a deep-sea, all-weather scientific laboratory which can host long-term research projects in one of the most severe ocean conditions in the world.

It was designed in three main sections that include a main offshore station, ship labs, and onshore support centres, and they are put in place to establish an all-inclusive research network.

In the centre of the project is the main platform that has a unique semi-submersible type of twin-hull.

This sophisticated design provides more stability on rough seas, and also, it enables full-scale testing of heavy deep-sea equipment that is hundreds of tons.

Exploration of depths of up to 10,000 meters will also be possible by the platform and will provide new frontiers to oceanic research.

The facility will be completed by 2030 and it is projected to be a crucial testing environment for the technologies associated with offshore mining, offshore oil and gas services and other marine industries.

In other ways other than its application in industries, it will be instrumental in the scientific knowledge of the ocean ecosystems, such as monitoring seasonal variations in the environment, and investigation of origins and evolution of life under extreme underwater conditions.

Moreover, the platform is also expected to improve the level of predicting typhoons, which will serve to increase disaster preparedness and mitigation.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University is spearheading the effort, with this university having declared the creation of a special institute of deep-sea science and engineering to aid the project in the long term objectives.
