Karachi, recognised as an international city, continues to hold a central and strategic position in the region. Tragic 1985 accident that changed urban planning
On April 15, 1985, a sorrowful incident occurred in Karachi that led to a major expansion in the number of flyovers and underpasses and compelled the government to think beyond roads and bridges. On that day, two speeding buses were racing each other at Nazimabad Chowrangi and ran over several students of Sir Syed Girls College. One of the students, Bushra Zaidi, lost her life in the accident. Following this tragic incident, the absence of a bridge or flyover at Nazimabad Chowrangi was strongly felt. Subsequently, the construction of Karachi’s first flyover was initiated at that location. As time passed, a number of other flyovers were constructed for the benefit of residents.
Nagan Chowrangi Flyover
The importance of Nagan Chowrangi Flyover cannot be denied. It serves as a vital link between several key areas of Karachi, including North Nazimabad, Buffer Zone, Gulberg, and New Karachi. The intersection functions as a major route for daily commuters, ensuring smooth transportation and connectivity. The presence of various public transport options such as buses, rickshaws and ride-hailing services further highlights its significance as a major transportation hub.
Construction of the flyover at Nagan Chowrangi in Karachi began in May 2008 under the Green Line Bus Project. The project was designed to improve traffic flow and accommodate both dedicated bus lanes and general traffic. A two-level flyover had been constructed at this intersection. Additionally, a 211-meter-long ramp had been built towards Inda Mor.
The total cost of the project was Rs 498 million. The first level of the bridge is 287 meters long, while the second level is 561 meters long. The connecting ramp from Level II to Inda Mor measures 211 meters.

Expansion joints of Nagan Chowrangi flyover
Then Administrator Karachi, Laiq Ahmed, in 2021, stated that the expansion joints of the Nagan Chowrangi flyover were in poor condition, posing a risk of accidents. Therefore, they were repaired on a priority basis and were to be replaced where necessary. Work was also underway to fix the lights on the expressway to facilitate traffic at night.
The Karachi Metropolitan Municipality was carrying out infrastructure maintenance using its own resources, with the aim of improving roads and highways. Nagan Chowrangi flyover remained open 24 hours a day for both light and heavy traffic. Therefore, repair work was to be conducted in a way that minimised disruption to traffic and was completed as quickly as possible.
The administration aims to provide similar facilities on roads, bridges, and flyovers throughout the city. Maintenance work is being carried out using all available resources of the Karachi Metropolitan Municipality, with field teams actively working in different areas.
