Why is Dubai closing famous Burj Al Arab hotel?

Burj Al Arab hotel

Since its first opening in 1999 the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai is set to undergo a major renovation lasting around 18 months according to a staff member. Amid tensions linked to the Iran and Israel conflict the development comes at a time when regional tourism has slowed.

According to Reuters the hotel owner Jumeirah Group said the in phases the work will be carried out under the direction of Paris based interior architect Tristan Auer.

While the company did not officially confirm a full closure, a staff member indicated that the hotel will shut temporarily, with guests being offered alternative accommodation at nearby properties. The closure period may still change.

The sail shaped landmark, one of Dubai’s most recognisable symbols, also sustained minor damage earlier this year when debris from an intercepted Iranian drone struck its facade. However, staff said the renovation had been planned well in advance and is not related to that incident.

Although Jumeirah has not linked the project to regional conflict, the timing is significant, as travel to Dubai has been affected by flight disruptions and a decline in visitor demand, putting pressure on the tourism and luxury hospitality sectors.

Dubai International Airport in chaos

Earlier, Dubai International Airport terminals were reportedly jam packed with a large number of people trying to leave the country as the situation keeps worsening in the region.

In several videos that went viral all over social media, it can be seen that a huge crowd of people was present at the airport terminals. However, many netizens claimed that the video is fake or old, which is resurfacing.

Prior to that, in the day, two drones fall near Dubai’s main airport, and Bahrain ‌evacuated some planes.
