The forest fires in Otsuchi have become one of Japan’s most serious wildfire emergencies of 2026. Hundreds of firefighters are working to control large forest fires that started 3 days ago in northern Japan.
The fires erupted in the mountainous areas of Lwate and have already burned about 700 hectares of land. More than 3,200 people have been asked by the authorities to evacuate their homes for safety. At least eight buildings have been damaged, but residents had already evacuated.
Helicopters are dropping water over the burning forests, while fire engines are being used near homes in the town of Otsuchi. More than 1,300 firefighters, helicopters, and Japan Self-Defence Forces troops are helping in the operation.
Warmer temperatures and dry winters are increasing the risk of wildfires in Japan. Climate change can also make droughts longer and more severe, creating conditions where forest fires can spread more easily.
Weather conditions are making the situation worse. According to reports, no significant rain is expected in the coming days, increasing fears that the fires could continue spreading. Some residents are hoping for rain to help control the situation.
Additionally, this is concerning and alarming situation because the same region experienced a major wildfire in 2025 in Ofunato, which became Japan’s worst wildfire in more than 50 years. That disaster destroyed many buildings and forced thousands of evacuations.
However, officials are working on controlling the situation and will keep updating the public.
