The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), on May 2, released a guideline to protect the SIM cards and your digital account.
According to a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, PTA warned users that unused or recycled SIM cards can expose their social media accounts, and this might lead to unauthorised access.
The post also said that mobile phone numbers should be kept updated and in use.
Remove the older links for the strong protection of your device.
To secure the device, your legal standing and finances, like digital mobile apps, enable strong security features.

Banking facilities like microfinance apps, such as Jazzcash, Easypaisa and social media platforms are usually associated with customers’ registered mobile numbers.
If a SIM is removed from your name or reused due to not being used for a long time, then the same number can be given to another person.
And if the precautionary measures are not taken in time, then a new user can access your social media or other digital accounts associated with this number.
The responsibility for any illegal, misleading or insulting activities committed by such accounts can be attributed to the actual account holder.
As a result, there is a risk of damaging legal records and reputation.
Similarly, if banking or financial apps associated with the old number are not protected, there may be a risk of financial fraud and misuse.
PTA has asked the users to take these steps in view of your online security:
- As soon as you remove or change a number from your name, update all your social media and digital platforms immediately.
- Always keep your existing and file number in your bank, microfinance and payment apps.
- File strong security features in accounts, such as two-factor authentication and account recovery settings.
- It is only possible to start digital security with the use of a SIM.
- Temporary and preliminary steps prove to be helpful in your identification, financial security and legal status.
