FIFA, the world football governing body, has invited the Iranian Football Federation (IFF) to its headquarters in Zurich for high-level discussions regarding Iran’s participation in the upcoming World Cup.
According to a foreign news agency, the meeting is scheduled to take place by May 20. The agenda will include detailed talks on Iran’s participation in the tournament, security arrangements, and other important administrative matters.
The report added that Iran’s participation in the World Cup is currently uncertain due to ongoing tensions and conflict in the Middle East. However, FIFA is actively working to resolve the situation.
On the other hand, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has already stated that Iran will definitely take part in the 2026 World Cup and that its matches will be played in the United States as scheduled.
It is worth noting that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, due to the current geopolitical and security situation, Iran’s participation remains a subject of global attention.
It is worth mentioning here that earlier FIFA had formally apologised following an incident involving the Iranian delegation in Canada. FIFA’s Secretary General sent a letter to Mehdi Taj, President of the Iranian Football Federation (IFF), expressing regret over the delegation being denied entry into Canada.
In the letter, FIFA emphasised its commitment to equal representation for all member associations, stating that such incidents contradict the core principles of international football. The Secretary General also assured that the organisation will take proactive steps to prevent similar issues in the future, ensuring no member nation faces such challenges again.
