The long-awaited remodelling of Kutchery Chowk in Rawalpindi is set to be opened for vehicular traffic next week, marking a major step toward easing congestion in one of the city’s busiest intersections.
According to Chief Traffic Officer Farhan Aslam, the upgraded junction could become operational as early as Tuesday. The project transforms the area into a signal-free corridor through the construction of new flyovers and underpasses.
The development is expected to significantly improve traffic flow for thousands of daily commuters, particularly those travelling to and from the district courts and surrounding administrative zones. Motorists have been facing prolonged delays since construction began in November 2025.
Once opened, the upgraded interchange is anticipated to reduce bottlenecks, streamline movement across key routes and enhance overall urban mobility in the area.
It is worth mentioning here that the state-of-the-art and historic Kutchery Chowk project in Rawalpindi was originally scheduled for completion within 18 months, having started on November 3, 2025. However, keeping public convenience in mind, work is being accelerated, and a revised completion deadline of May 2026 has been set.
The estimated cost of the project has increased due to rising prices of construction materials and transportation. The Commissioner urged all concerned departments to complete the work within the prescribed timeline. He also directed the Parks and Horticulture Authority to ensure that all work is completed on time and meets quality standards.
The total cost has risen from Rs 14 billion to over Rs 15 billion due to increasing prices of construction materials and petroleum products, according to media reports. The upgraded facility is expected to significantly benefit both lawyers and citizens by improving access to court services and reducing congestion in the area.
