Senior trade negotiators from China and the United States are set to conduct economic and trade consultations on Wednesday in South Korea, ahead of an expected visit by US President Donald Trump to China.
According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency, China’s Commerce Ministry has announced that Vice Premier He Lifeng will head a delegation to Seoul on Tuesday and Wednesday for these discussions.
The United States will be represented by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Bessent indicated on Sunday that he would begin his travels to Japan and South Korea starting Monday, in advance of Trump’s expected summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
On Tuesday, he is scheduled to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, as well as Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama and other representatives from both the government and private sector, to engage in discussions regarding US-Japan economic relations.
Following this, the US Secretary will proceed to Seoul on Wednesday for talks with He.
He further commented, “Economic security is national security.”
Pakistan, China sign off multiple trade agreements
Earlier, Pakistan and China signed a series of agreements on Friday aimed at strengthening cooperation in industry, healthcare and livestock, during President Asif Ali Zardari’s ongoing visit to Beijing.
The agreements included one joint venture and two Memorandums of Understanding, with a focus on construction machinery, medical technology and animal health.
The partnership is expected to improve the supply of construction machinery and equipment linked to projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
