England has unveiled their squad for the upcoming first Test against New Zealand, making bold changes following the Ashes series.
Seven players from the Ashes squad have been dropped as the team reshapes its lineup ahead of the new series. Former Australian cricketer Marcus North has been appointed as an England selector, marking a significant new chapter in the team’s management structure.
New additions to the England squad include Emilio Gage and James Reeve, while Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope have been dropped. Rehan Ahmed and Ollie Robinson return to the squad for the first time since 2024. Ben Stokes will lead England’s 15-man squad for the first Test at Lord’s.
England Men’s Managing Director Rob Key explain regarding Test squad selection
England Men’s Managing Director Rob Key has explained the rationale behind the latest Test squad selection, stating that it reflects a blend of established international players, in-form county cricketers, and emerging talents being developed for the future.
He said the squad was chosen based on current form as well as long-term planning, with several experienced players returning to the group while fast bowler Jofra Archer continues his recovery and workload management through franchise cricket.
“Emilio, James and Sonny have all earned their opportunities through consistent performances and have impressed us not only with their talent but also with how they’ve handled high-pressure situations,” he said.
“It’s also good to welcome back players like Rehan, Matt and Ollie, who each bring different skills and experience. Competition for places is very strong, which is exactly where we want it to be in a Test team.”
He also confirmed that Jofra Archer will miss the first Test, adding that his involvement in the IPL is part of a structured return to red-ball cricket after a demanding six months on the road.
