Netflix announces new account sharing restrictions

Netflix is introducing new changes to its account and password sharing, now requiring a separate email address for each profile.

It is important to note that many people like to save money by sharing a single account on the streaming service. At the same time, the profile feature keeps the profiles separate.

Earlier in 2022, Netflix began attempts to stop the account sharing method by requesting that all account users be based at a single email address.

The company previously said that users in different locations could access the account by paying a fee.

During this time, the streaming service also said that it was using IP addresses, device IDs and account activity to detect unauthorised password sharing.

This feature came to the United States (US) three years ago. Now, Netflix is adding a new restriction by requiring separate email addresses.

In early June 2026, some Netflix users  started receiving on-screen notifications requesting them to add a new email address to their profile.

According to Reddit users, the change was made for accounts with multiple profiles in the same house.

Two weeks ago, the new change began rolling out. Many Reddit users now claim that this can be avoided by adding changes on Gmail addresses.

The new feature works by users adding an email address opening the Profiles section under the account settings.

The Profile user can then use it to log in to the Netflix account and switch to any profile.

Kids profiles have been excluded for the new change. Email addresses cannot be linked to these profiles.

Now, people who want to create different profiles for types of content they view such as one profile for Movies and another for TV shows, will have to make multiple email addresses.
