New hack found in PlayStation Network, here's how hackers can gain access

A recent PlayStation Network hack has emerged, causing users to lose access to their accounts, and here’s how it might impact you.

As the PlayStation Network (PSN) nears its 20th anniversary, many players have stacked up extensive game libraries over nearly two decades.

With some gamers investing thousands of dollars into their accounts, users now express fear and concern over the possibility of losing everything due to a security issue.

Reports from the week (via Insider Gaming) indicate a new breach affecting PSN users, enabling hackers to take over accounts with just two small pieces of information.

The issue was first highlighted by Colin Moriarty, host of ‘The Godfather of PlayStation podcasts,’ in a post on X (formerly Twitter) about a targeted attack on his PSN account.

Moriarty stated, “My PSN account was hacked, seemingly as part of an ongoing sophisticated series of moves against both random and ‘prominent’ users.”

How to protect your PSN account

It has since been confirmed that hackers need only two small pieces of information to access your account, your PlayStation Network ID and an old transaction detail, like a receipt from PlayStation Support.

Once they have this information, the hacker contacts Sony support to try to access your account, providing both pieces of information as “proof of ownership.”

After this, Sony will allow access to the account, enabling the hacker to change details like the email address and password, as well as disable 2FA.

Users have been advised not to share their PSN IDs online or any transaction information to keep their PSN accounts safe.
