Sony introduces new rule to use PlayStation

Sony age verification PlayStation

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced plans to introduce an age verification rule for PlayStation users.

The company did this as part of its efforts to meet regulatory requirements in different countries.

The company said the changes will begin rolling out later this year and will apply to communication features on the platform.

Users who do not complete the age verification process will not be able to use voice chat or send messages through their consoles.

In a statement, Sony said the measure is designed to create safer and more age-appropriate experiences for players, while still giving users control over their privacy.

The company added that the verification process will be a one-time check and is expected to take only a few minutes.

Sony said users who complete the process in advance will be able to continue using communication features without interruption.

However, those who choose not to verify their age will still have access to other services, including games, trophies, and the PlayStation Store.

The move follows similar steps taken by other gaming platforms.

Services such as Steam have already introduced age checks in countries like the United Kingdom to comply with local laws.

Industry analysts say the introduction of age verification reflects a broader trend, as companies respond to increasing pressure from regulators to strengthen online safety, particularly for younger users.

Sony has not provided full details on how the verification system will work, but said more information will be shared closer to the rollout.
