Islamabad police arrest a constable accused of demanding a bribe from a citizen at a police checkpoint, according to a statement from the force.
A case has been registered against the constable at Secretariat Police Station, following allegations that he sought money from a member of the public.
The Islamabad Police spokesperson said the arrest was part of an ongoing internal accountability drive aimed at tackling corruption within the department.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Qazi Ali Raza said the constable would face legal proceedings and would be punished in accordance with the law if found guilty.
He said departmental action, alongside legal proceedings, would be taken against officers and personnel found to be involved in corruption.
“No police officer is above the law,” Mr Raza said, adding that action would be taken against personnel involved in wrongdoing “without discrimination”.
The Islamabad Police chief said the force maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption.
He described corruption carried out under the cover of the police uniform as unacceptable and said officers who brought the department into disrepute had no place in the force.
Mr Raza said the accountability process would continue across the Islamabad Police and that strict action would be taken against those found to be involved in corrupt practices.
The police did not provide further details about the alleged bribe or the amount involved in the statement.
