Punjab begins cyber surveillance for Muharram 2026, over 5,000 pages blocked

Punjab has launched a special cyber patrol on social media across the province to monitor and curb the spread of controversial and hateful content during the holy month of Muharram 2026, according to reports on Monday.

According to the officials, the Safe City Authority has already blocked more than 5,000 pages and websites that were found to be involved in uploading provocative and hate related material.

Authorities said that the dedicated cyber monitoring teams will remain active 24/7 throughout Muharram 2026.

In addition to this, personnel from Safe City, police, and other law enforcement agencies are also jointly tracking multiple social media platforms.

They further added that a continuous surveillance is being carried out to maintain peace and order during Muharram.

Any individual who is found sharing objectionable, inflammatory, or religiously sensitive content will be identified. And they will also face legal actions.

Officials further stated that the Safe City has so far taken action against more than 5,000 social media pages and accounts that were found to be involved in spreading hate material.

Citizens have also been urged to act responsibly and make sure that any content shared online complies with the law, ethical standards, and religious sensitivities.

Army, Rangers to be deployed for security arrangements

In another update regarding the safety measures for Muharram 2026, the Punjab Home Department has decided to request the deployment of Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel to ensure foolproof security during Muharram ul Haram.

According to the official sources, the Punjab Home Department has written a letter to the Federal Ministry of Interior seeking the assistance of the armed forces and Rangers to help maintain law and order during the holy month.

According to the details, in total, the services of 137 companies have been requested for deployment across 39 districts of Punjab.

This includes 61 companies of the Pakistan Army and 76 companies of the Rangers.
