Qatar rewrite history books with first WC point against Switzerland

Qatar made history by earning its first-ever FIFA World Cup point after holding Switzerland to a 1–1 draw in the opening match of Day 3 of the tournament.

Played in San Francisco, the Group B encounter was largely dominated by Switzerland, which controlled possession and created several dangerous chances. However, Qatar showed resilience and secured a valuable point with a late equaliser, marking a memorable milestone in the nation’s World Cup journey.

In the 17th minute of the first half, Switzerland was awarded a penalty after a foul by the Qatari defence. Beryl Embolo converted the spot kick to give Switzerland a 1–0 lead.

The score remained unchanged until halftime. Both teams continued to push for goals in the second half, but Switzerland maintained the upper hand for most of the match.

However, in the closing stages of the game, Qatar finally found an equaliser. Following an attacking move, Boalem Khokhi headed the ball into the Swiss net to make it 1–1. Neither side was able to score again, and the match ended in a 1–1 draw.

On the other hand, Scotland made a historic 1-0 win against Haiti, ending their 36-year drought from a World Cup win. It was a very good start for their World Cup campaign.

Captain John McGinn scored in the opening 45 minutes to give Scotland the win, with thousands of travelling fans cheering him on.

It was in the 28th minute that Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide dodged Che Adams’s close-range shot.

The ball, after being dodged, bounced to McGinn, who was able to score a goal for his team.
