Scotland end 36-year wait for a World Cup victory with win over Haiti

Scotland World Cup victory

On Saturday, Scotland made a historic 1-0 win against Haiti, ending their 36-year drought from a World Cup win.

It was a very good start for their World Cup campaign.

Captain John McGinn scored in the opening 45 minutes to give Scotland the win, with thousands of travelling fans cheering him on.

It was in the 28th minute when Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide dodged Che Adams’s close-range shot.

The ball after being dodged bounced to McGinn who was able to score a goal for his team.

The Scots dominated most of the match, however at times, they had a very hard time facing the Haitian resistance.

Haiti, the first time they’ve appeared in the FIFA World Cup since 1974, were attacking at times but had difficulty in producing clear-cut chances.

Ruben Providence almost scored a goal for Haiti before half-time only for Aaron Hickey to deny him.

It was late in the game when Frantzdy Pierrot also almost scored a goal but narrowly missed it.

Angus Gunn, the goalkeeper for Scotland, had a quiet afternoon as their defence was solid.

Tournament favourites Brazil and 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco had a 1-1 draw earlier in the day which puts Steve Clarke’s side at the top of Group C.

The outcome brings a smile to the face of Scotland fans as they have a shot at reaching the knockout round for the first time in their World Cup history, particularly in this cutthroat format of the tournament.

After missing the big leagues for 28 years, their fans had a wonderful first match.

Scotland is next against Morocco on Friday in Boston.
