Canada registered the first FIFA World Cup victory in its history with a dominant 6-0 win over Qatar in a Group B clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday.
Jonathan David starred for the co-hosts with a hat-trick, while Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also found the net. An own goal by Qatar further added to Canada’s commanding scoreline.
The match was overshadowed by a serious injury to Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone, who suffered a severe leg injury early in the second half following a challenge from Qatar’s Assim Madibo. Medical staff rushed onto the field to treat Kone before he was stretchered off, as players from both sides looked visibly shaken by the incident.
Saliba later paid tribute to his injured teammate by holding up Kone’s jersey after scoring.
Qatar’s problems began in the first half when Homam Ahmed was shown a straight red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Madibo was initially booked for the challenge on Kone, but after a VAR review, the yellow card was upgraded to a red, reducing Qatar to nine men.
Canada capitalised on the numerical advantage, producing a clinical display to secure a historic victory and move to four points in Group B following their opening draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Despite the landmark result, post-match attention largely focused on Kone’s condition following one of the most distressing injuries of the tournament so far.
Earlier, in the 26th match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Switzerland vs Bosnia, Switzerland won against Bosnia, scoring 4 goals.
The team of Bosnia could only manage to score one goal. The match, played in Los Angeles, saw both sides create several scoring opportunities during the first half, but neither team was able to score a goal.
The good performance of the goalkeepers made it impossible for both of the teams to kick the football to reach a goal.
After the restart, Switzerland increased the tempo and put Bosnia’s defence under sustained pressure.
The Swiss side completely transformed the contest by scoring four goals in a remarkable 23-minute spell, including stoppage time.
Substitute Johan Manzambi was the standout performer, scoring twice for Switzerland, while Ruben Vargas and Xhaka added a goal each to put the result beyond doubt.
