A thief wearing a mask bearing the image of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was caught on CCTV attempting to break into a mobile phone.

According to Indian media reports, the incident took place in the Rajasthan state of India on June 28 in Bhilwara district. CCTV footage showed the suspect trying to force open the shop’s shutter with an iron rod, but he was unable to gain entry.

The police said that the suspect had worn the mask in an apparent attempt to conceal his identity during the attempted burglary.

However, investigators said the disguise failed to prevent his identification. They said CCTV cameras in nearby areas had captured the same man earlier in the day without the mask while he was allegedly surveying the area. According to police, he was wearing the same clothes seen in the attempted break-in.

The attempted burglary was unsuccessful, with the suspect leaving empty-handed after failing to break the lock.

Police said a separate burglary was reported later the same night at another mobile phone shop around 800 metres away. Officers are investigating whether the two incidents are linked.

No arrests have been announced, and the investigation is continuing.
