The Lahore Traffic Police have announced strict enforcement measures against drivers operating smoke-emitting vehicles. These steps are taken to ensure air quality, road safety and compliance with traffic regulations.
New policy includes that commercial drivers found using vehicles that produce excessive smoke could face suspension of their driving licences, while other violations will also lead to legal action.
According to Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi, only commercial vehicles meeting all legal and safety requirements will be allowed to operate within Lahore. He further stressed that protecting the lives and property of citizens remains the department’s highest priority. Drivers must possess valid driving licences, while their vehicles are also required to have updated certificates and functioning safety equipment.
Further, authorities have made it clear that commercial vehicles lacking valid documentation will not be permitted to enter the city. Traffic police have been instructed to take firm action against vehicles operating without proper front and rear lights, and those using high-beam headlights in violation of traffic rules.
Additionally,, uncovered loaders contribute to dust pollution and create hazards for other road users, must follow the regulations facing legal action.
Moreover, to ensure effective implementation, Lahore Traffic Police have launched extensive checking operations at all major entry and exit points of the city. Senior police officers, including SPs and DSPs, have been directed to personally supervise and ensure there is no leniency toward violators.
On the other hand, previously the government had announced large-scale measures to promote electric transport, setting a target of increasing the number of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country to 2.2 million by 2030.
According to a briefing given to the Senate Standing Committee on Industry and Production, a subsidy of Rs 9 billion has been allocated for the purchase of two and three-wheeler electric vehicles. Citizens who purchase electric motorcycles will also receive financial assistance of up to Rs 80,000 per motorcycle.
