Flour prices have risen sharply across Pakistan as Bureau of Statistics recent data shows that the price of a 20-kilogram flour bag has reached a record high in several cities. This added financial burden on many households.
Karachi records the highest price of flour in the country. The continued increase in the cost of this essential food item has intensified concerns over the rising cost of living, particularly for lower and middle income families.
The highest recorded price for a 20kg flour bag has now reached Rs2,900, surpassing the previous record of Rs2,800. The latest increase reflects concerns from consumers over the affordability of basic food commodities.
Karachi residents are paying the highest rate, with a 20kg flour bag selling for Rs2,900. In Islamabad, Quetta and Khuzdar, the same bag is available for Rs2,800, while consumers in Peshawar are paying around Rs2,750.
Moreover, in other cities such as Rawalpindi flour is being sold for Rs2,747, Rs2,740 in Hyderabad and Rs2,700 in Bannu. Prices stand at Rs2,560 in Sukkur and Rs2,500 in Larkana.
The Bureau of Statistics also reported comparatively lower prices in several cities. A 20kg flour bag costs Rs2,420 in Multan, Rs2,400 in Gujranwala and Bahawalpur, Rs2,333 in Sialkot, Rs2,300 in Faisalabad, Rs2,250 in Lahore, and Rs2,240 in Sargodha.
Moreover, consumers state that the persistent rise in flour prices has made it increasingly difficult to manage household expenses. They added on that higher costs of electricity, gas and fuel, combined with the growing prices of essential food items, have significantly made the affordability hard for them.
Citizens have urged the government to take effective measures to control the rising prices of essential household commodities, and stabilise the market to provide relief to consumers facing financial pressure.
