The government of Iran has declared a public holiday in Tehran on Monday, July 6.

The government said that the move is intended to help millions of people travelling to attend the mourning ceremonies of the martyred Syed Ali Khamenei.

Government spokeswoman Fatima Mohajerani said the holiday would make it easier for mourners to travel to and from the capital during the commemorative events.

According to an official statement, a national day of mourning will be observed, while condolence gatherings, prayer services and other religious events are scheduled to take place in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad between 4 and 8 July.

Authorities said large numbers of people are expected to attend the ceremonies from across the country.

The Iranian government also said funeral arrangements for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are planned to take place in Mashhad on 8 July. It said security, traffic management and public services are being put in place to accommodate the expected crowds.

Ms Mohajerani said similar mourning events would also be held outside Iran, including in the Iraqi cities of Baghdad, Kadhimiya, Karbala and Najaf.

Officials said the public holiday is intended to ease travel, reduce traffic congestion and help government departments manage the large gatherings.

The government has urged people attending the events to follow official instructions and take necessary precautions while travelling.
