The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government has sought additional security personnel from the federal government to help restore law and order amid what it describes as a deteriorating security situation across the region.
In an official letter sent to the Ministry of Interior, the AJK government requested the immediate deployment of 4,000 Federal Constabulary (FC) personnel and seven wings of Pakistan Rangers to assist local authorities in maintaining public order.
According to the letter, the government said that the deteriorating security situation is due to the violent activities of the banned Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), saying its actions posed a serious threat to peace and stability.
The government said prolonged sit-ins and protest activities in Poonch and Rawalakot had disrupted daily life, while organised attempts to disturb peace were also reported in Muzaffarabad and Mirpur.
The letter further stated that armed individuals had targeted law enforcement personnel and civilians during recent incidents. It said that four security personnel were martyred, while 174 others sustained serious injuries in violent clashes.
Authorities also revealed that vehicles transporting essential food supplies were set on fire during the unrest, disrupting the movement of essential goods.
The AJK government said that additional security personnel were essential to maintain the writ of the state and ensure the safety of citizens. It requested that 50 per cent of the deployed personnel be equipped with weapons and ammunition, while the remaining 50 per cent be provided with anti-riot gear to deal with public disturbances.
The government urged the federal authorities to expedite the deployment of the requested personnel and provide the necessary equipment without delay. Copies of the letter were also sent to the Chief Secretary and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) AJK.
