Pakistani filmmaker Mehreen Jabbar has shared her views on why Pakistan has produced very few Netflix Originals, saying the main reason is the country’s smaller market compared to India.
Mehreen Jabbar further stated that Netflix’s regional operations are managed from India, where the platform has a much larger subscriber base.
According to her, streaming companies make business decisions based on the size of their audience, which is why India receives greater investment in original productions.
She explained that the issue is more about market economics than creative talent, adding that Pakistan has many skilled writers, directors, and actors capable of producing high-quality content.
Jabbar’s remarks have sparked debate on social media, with many users discussing the challenges faced by Pakistan’s entertainment industry in attracting global streaming platforms.

On the other hand, Pakistan is in talks with the world’s leading OTT streaming platforms, including Netflix, to form long-term partnerships to promote Pakistani films and TV dramas abroad, Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal announced.
The minister said in a post on X that Pakistani productions are very popular and appreciated by people around the world, and the creative and cultural industry is one of the main pillars of the government’s export strategy of Uraan Pakistan.
He said the regional politics have created a level of obscurity for Pakistani content on major streaming platforms, stating that it deserves to be seen on global platforms.
