AJK Election Commission completes arrangements for upcoming general elections

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission has completed the election schedule and finalised arrangements for the upcoming general elections. According to the commission, polling for all 45 constituencies of the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly will be held on July 27, 2026.

The Election Commission said all necessary measures have been completed to ensure a peaceful, transparent and fair electoral process.

A total of 846 candidates are contesting the elections, while the number of registered voters stands at 3,804,368. These include 2,001,653 male voters and 1,802,715 female voters.

According to the Election Commission, 33 constituencies are designated for residents of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, while 12 constituencies are reserved for refugees living in Pakistan. To facilitate the voting process, 6,983 polling stations and 10,913 polling booths have been established.

The Election Commission further stated that all necessary arrangements have been completed to ensure peaceful, transparent, and fair elections.

On the other hand, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has called for the establishment of a ‘Truth and Reconciliation Commission’ to address and resolve the issues facing AJK.

Addressing an election rally in Dadyal, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said he was visiting the area as part of the election campaign, adding that the current situation was visible to everyone.

He described the upcoming elections as the most important in the history of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, saying the present circumstances are a test for the Pakistani state and all political parties.

The PPP chairman said the primary responsibility of politicians is to resolve public issues and represent the voice of the people; however, he added that politicians have not been fulfilling this responsibility effectively.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari emphasised that politicians must act as a bridge for the people of Kashmir, warning that when a political vacuum emerges, non-political and extremist elements find opportunities to fill the gap.
