Pakistan is exploring efforts to bring Apple into its mobile phone manufacturing ecosystem, with a potential meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Apple CEO John Ternus drawing attention.
The development was discussed during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication.
Officials from the Engineering Development Board (EDB) told lawmakers that efforts were underway to attract Apple to Pakistan’s manufacturing sector.
They also revealed that arrangements were being explored for a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Apple CEO John Ternus during the premier’s upcoming visit to the United States.
The talks come as Pakistan’s local mobile phone manufacturing industry continues to expand. Officials said 37 companies are currently manufacturing mobile phones in Pakistan, with more than 35 million devices produced locally so far.
However, no agreement has been reached or officially announced for iPhone manufacturing in Pakistan.
If Apple decides to enter Pakistan’s manufacturing ecosystem, the move could potentially bring new investment, technology transfer and skilled employment while helping Pakistan become more integrated into global electronics supply chains.
For now, the possibility of locally manufactured iPhones remains under discussion, with any potential Apple investment depending on future talks and formal decisions.
In other news, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a temporary mobile phone registration facility for overseas Pakistanis and foreign nationals.
This major step will allow the overseas Pakistanis to use their personal devices in Pakistan for up to 120 days without paying taxes or facing service disruptions.
The initiative has been launched through the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) and is aimed at facilitating short-term visitors who bring mobile phones from abroad and wish to use local SIM cards during their stay.
Earlier, Apple officially introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. The company announced the device on September 9, 2026. It brings a new foldable design with two displays and upgraded hardware. The iPhone Duo opens to reveal a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple says it is the largest display ever included on an iPhone. The screen uses Super Retina XDR technology and supports ProMotion and Always On features.
When folded, the phone has a 5.4-inch outer display. Apple says this screen offers 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. Both displays use the same aspect ratio for a consistent viewing experience.
iPhone Duo brings a new foldable design
Apple designed the device around portability and durability. The phone uses grade 5 titanium with a polished finish. It also includes a precision hinge with more than 100 components. The inner display uses a nano-texture finish. This helps reduce glare and reflections. Apple also designed the display to reduce the visibility of the fold. The device has an IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance. Ceramic Shield protects the back. Ceramic Shield 2 protects the outer display and offers improved scratch resistance.
A20 Pro chip powers the new iPhone
The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s new A20 Pro chip. The chip is also used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple says it provides up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. The phone includes a custom vapor chamber for thermal management. It also uses a dual-battery design. Apple says the device can provide up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display. Fast charging can reach 50 percent in around 20 minutes. Wireless charging can reach the same level in around 30 minutes with compatible chargers.
